Frankfurt, Germany is located on both sides of the Main River and is the fifth-largest city in Germany. The name, Frankfurt, is derived from Franconofurt - a Germanic tribe of the Franks. In the southern part of the city lies the Frankfurt City Forest (Frankfurter Stadtwald), Germany's largest forest within a city. Some of the Main sights to see are Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral-a gothic building built in the 14-15th centuries, Römer town hall-constructed in the 14th century, St. Paul’s Church-a national historic monument, Alte Oper- Frankfurt's once famous opera house and now a concert hall, and The Oper Frankfurt-a major opera house of Germany and one of the most leading opera houses in the world. The city center was bombed in WWII and its medieval buildings destroyed but was reconstructed after the war in modern architectural style.
Frankfurt is noted as having the second largest number of skyscrapers in Europe, after Paris, and is one of the few European cities to allow skyscrapers within the old city center. It is easy to get around Frankfurt without a car as an underground and above ground transportation system was created in the 1970’s and includes a subway train system to reach the city center and outlying areas. Close to the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) is the location of one of the largest Red Light districts in Germany.
Frankfurt hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. The most famous festival called the Rheingau-Music festival is held in May with concerts being hosted at castles and in open air sites surrounded by vineyards. The Museumsuferfest (Museum-Riverbank festival) is held at summer’s end and is one of the largest cultural events in Germany. For 3 days, it offers opportunities to tempt your senses and perhaps purchase new things from around the world, ending with an impressive fireworks display.
